22th Edition (October ’23) – Scented Tea

The twenty-second edition – October 2023 – of the KLUBBOX @ Siam Tea Shop is a “Scented Tea” box. As such, it offers 20g each of five “scented” teas of different type and origin. The spectrum ranges from green tea scented with jasmine or osmanthus flowers to combining gingseng roots with oolong tea leaves to the much-vaunted steaming of the latter with milk extracts. A specialty of northern Thailand is the processing of oolong tea using the “sticky rice” herb native to Southeast Asia. As the name suggests, this surprises with a distinct “sticky rice” aroma, which the herb transfers to the tea leaves during scenting.

Classic Scented Tea vs. Flavored Tea

The classic scenting methods, which were mainly developed in China a long time ago, preferably use natural aroma dispensers. These can be flowers, herbs or roots, although the scenting of tea leaves with milk extracts is of more recent origin. Examples of well-known and particularly popular aromatic sources include jasmine and osmanthus flowers, ginseng roots, orange peels. The above-mentioned “sticky rice” herb also looks back on a long tradition in Yunnan as a scenting agent for Pu Erh teas.

In contrast to this, the modern flavoring of tea leaves often also uses aroma donors obtained artificially. These can be industrially produced “nature-identical” essential oils, or completely artificial ones. While Siam Tea Shop stays off the latter for personal preferences of its operator, high-quality representatives of classic scented teas have always been an integral part of the offering.

In order to offer the broadest possible cross-section of the world of scented teas in terms of origin, processing category and aroma dispenser used, the Okober 23 club box contains 20g of each of the following 5 types of tea:
