23rd Edition (November ’23) – Jasmine Tea
The twenty-third edition – November 2023 – of the KLUBBOX @ Siam Tea Shop is a “Jasmine Tea” box. As such, it offers 20g each of four Jasmine-scented teas of different type and origin. At this, the spectrum ranges from 2 different types of jasmine green tea to a jasmine white silver needle tea to a jasmine-scented oolong tea.
The Scenting of Tea Leaves with Jasmine Flowers
In China, the motherland of tea culture, the scenting of tea leaves with jasmine flowers has a centuries-long tradition. It is usually green or white tea types that are considered to be suitable for such scenting. However, the scenting of unroasted, low-oxidized oolong teas with jasmine flowers is also now a widespread standard.
In the classical scenting process, one starts by blending the – already processed – tea leaves with freshly picked jasmine blossoms. To achieve an optimal scenting effect, the early evening hours are best for this purpose. This is the time when jasmine blossoms open and release their fragrance. For best quality, the jasmine blossoms are sorted out again on the next day. Another quality factor arises from the number of repetitions of this process. While tea leaves scented just once will adopt a subtle jasmine aroma, the intensity of scenting increases from round to round. Jasmine teas with particularly intense jasmine flavor undergo up to 5 “scenting rounds,” each with freshly picked jasmine blossoms.
In order to provide the broadest possible cross-section of the world of jasmine teas, the November 23 Clubbox contains 20g of each of the following 4 teas:
The Teas in the October ’23 Clubbox
- Fuding Jasmine White Silver Needle – Particularly precious and elegant jasmine tea variant of the Chinese white tea classic. Pure white tea buds from Fuding count, Fujian province, naturally scented with freshly picked jasmine flowers. The sheer wealth of intensive, lovely sweet and floral taste notes is owed to at least 5 rounds of scenting, each time with new jasmine flowers, which for best taste of the resulting are carefully sorted out again at the end of the scenting process.
- Jasmine Dragon Pearls – Spring Imperial Dragon Pearls are a tea specialty from Fuding county, Fujian province, China. Basis of our Spring Imperial Jasmin Dragon Pearls is a spring-picked high grade green tea of 1+2 picking standard. The green tea leaves are scented 5 times with fresh jasmine flowers, before being rolled into the characteristic even-surfaced ball shape.
- Qingming Maofeng Jasmine Snow Flake (Bi Tan Piaou Xue) – “Jasmine Snowflake” or “Bi Tan Piao Xue” (=”snow flakes in the green lake”) is a Jasmine-scented green tea. The exquisite selection of its ingredients – an early spring Maofeng green tea and fresh midsummer jasmine blossoms – as well as the supreme processing excellence make it a qualitative spearhead within its category. The tea owes its particularly intense jasmine taste and fragrance to the five scenting runs performed according to old tradition.
- DMS Bai Yai Xianpian Jasmine Oolong – The tea basis of our Jasmine-scented green tea from Doi Mae Salong, north Thailand, are leaves of the native “Assamica” tea tree. The scenting takes place through blending the tea leaves with jasmine blossoms and jasmine essential oil after processing. Aroma and taste of the intensely yellow cup combines the jasmine’s characteristic floral note with the fresh taste of green tea.
