Japanese Tea Cup Set ‘Zen’ (Yunomi), 150 ml/cup, Japanese ceramics, craquele, different designs. The Japanese ceramic tea cup set ‘Zen’, consisting of 5 different beautiful craquele designs, is perfectly suitable for serving and savouring Japanese green teas or any other type of tea. The relatively common size makes it particularly fit for the everyday private tea drinking alone or in groups, while the artful Japanese craquele designs and the unique curved shape are a safe eyecatcher at any dedicated event or casual social gathering. The Japanese Teacup Set ‘Zen’ comes in a chic gift box (see picture).
The Yunomi tea cup resembles a common tea mug, characterized by being taller than wide. Tea cups were initially brought to Japan from China starting from the 13th century, but just as with their characteristic side handle teapots (Kyusu), the Japanese soon began to develop and produce their own design preferences, resulting for once in the typical tapered Japanese teacup, the Chawan, and second in the taller and straighter “Yunomi” design, pretty much like the western “mug”.
Unlike the Chawan, Yunomi teacups are generally “only” used to drink tea, but not to prepare tea in them. This is why they are not usually used for Matcha Tea, as Matcha Tea is frequently prepared in the same cup than it is drunk from, and the Yunomi shape doesn’t provide enough width for stirring the Matcha powder in with a Matcha whisk.
