Dhara Black Needle is a climate- and forest-friendly cultivated black tea from northern Thailand. As such, it comes from native “Assamica” type tea trees thriving in their natural biodiverse (subtropical) forest environments. Due to the highly diverse natural input in the (forest) soil and their deep-reaching roots, such “wild” teas are particularly rich in taste and active substances. Typical for black tea made of the region’s large-leaved Assamica varieties are sweet cocoa and coffee notes with a spicy touch of roast.

Forest-friendly black tea from Monsoon Teas’ “Dhara” line
The black tea from Monsoon Teas’ “Dhara” line is part of the specialist provider’s range of naturally cultivated teas. Therefore, Dhara Black Needle first of all is a black tea from climate and forest-friendly cultivation. As such, it comes from “assamica” tea trees native to northern Thailand, thriving in their natural biodiverse environments. With a picking standard of one young bud plus two leaves, the tea leaves are extraordinary large. This also hints at the age of the tea trees thriving in the forests of Chiang Mai Province’s Mae Taeng District.
The processing essentially consists in breaking up the cell structures in the tea leaf and full oxidation of tea juices contained therein. As is typical for small tea producers in Northern Thailand, large parts of the processing are handwork. This already starts with the picking. The tea gardens are in inaccessible terrain and are hardly recognizable as such due to their natural nature. In addition, they can only be reached by the pickers in strenuous, hours-long hiking treks through virtually untouched wilderness. Accordingly, the effort involved in picking is unequally high compared to conventional monoculture cultivation. In return, due to the highly diverse natural input in the (forest) soil and their deep-reaching roots, such “wild” teas are particularly rich in taste and active substancess.
Taste and Preparation
The southern Chinese province of Yunnan, together with areas in northern Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and northern Vietnam, forms the evolutionary cradle of the ancient tea tree. Sweet cocoa and coffee notes in combination with spicy roast aromas are typical of the black teas made of the region’s large-leaved Assamica varieties. And our black tea from natural cultivation in northern Thailand is a particularly powerful and substantial representative of its kind ……
With 200ml sparkling hot water (90-100 ° C) on 5g tea leaves, a full-bodied, perfectly harmonious taste emerges after 3 minutes of infusing. Beyond that, spicy roast and slightly bitter coffee notes begin to surface. Instead of an extended brewing period, we therefore recommend a second infusion (5 minutes), bringing out the tea’s considerable remaining potential.

The spice in the soup, however, is combining these basics with China’s millennia-old knowledge and the most modern insights of tea processing.
